FDA allowing more time for “healthy” labeling feedback

WASHINGTON — The US Meals and Drug Administration (FDA) is extending the remark interval for the proposed rule to redefine the time period “wholesome” in its use on meals bundle labeling. The brand new deadline for feedback is Feb. 16, 2023.

In a revision of the FDA’s authentic definition established in 1994, the proposed rule would require merchandise labeled with the phrase “wholesome” to include a significant quantity of components from nutrient-dense meals teams together with fruits, greens, dairy, grains, protein and oils.

For example, the FDA stated a cereal would wish to include a specific amount of complete grains and cling to limits for saturated fats, sodium, and added sugars to incorporate the “wholesome” declare on its bundle. 

The proposed rule, entitled “Meals labeling: nutrient content material claims; definition of time period ‘wholesome,’” appeared in the Federal Register on Sept. 29. The FDA stated is extending the remark interval by 50 days, in response to a request from stakeholders to permit further time for individuals to develop and submit feedback.
